Another way to find your routing number is by looking at the bottom of your negotiable instruments like the personal check. The routing number for your account is the code at the lower left corner of your check usually put in between two signs that look like semicolons.

At the bottom of a personal check, there are three numbers usually printed with magnetic ink.

The first 9-digit code is the routing number, the next is your account number, and the last set of numbers typically represent the check number. The routing number can come first or in the middle.

How Routing Numbers Work and Their Importance

Routing numbers are a very important component of the overall banking system. To better understand how routing numbers work, let's explore how they originated, how they are derived and their importance.

Before we dive into the importance, I created a free credit card and budget tracker that will enable you to save down your routing numbers easily. This will help you build a full personal financial plan. Download the free tracker below and get started living better financially.

The Origin of Routing Numbers

ABA initially created the Routing numbers to make check processing secure and more manageable. It was a way to identify the paying bank uniquely. It was used to assure the person taking a check that they would get the cash promised from the payer's bank.

The first digits of the Federal Reserve were added to the routing number of each bank.

The Federal Reserve routing symbol identified the institution type and the Federal Reserve district where the account was opened. The routing numbers were later used in electronic check-cashing networks in the 1960s, which helped speed-up check processing.

How the Bank Routing Number is Derived

The first four Wells Fargo routing numbers' digits represent the Federal Reserve routing symbol. It identifies the location where the check was printed. The next four figures are the American Bankers Association (ABA) identifier. It is a digit that helps define the financial institution on which you opened your account.

The last digit is the check digit that is usually calculated using an algorithm. It is used to authenticate the 8-digit bank routing number. It is possible to validate a check digit by calculating the algorithm and comparing it with the one that is printed on the check.

How to do the Checksum Algorithm

The checksum algorithm also known as the modules 10, the straight summation is a method used to authenticate the routing number. It is a series of multiplication and addition executed on the routing numbers digits. A valid routing number is identified if the sum of the algorithm is a number that is evenly divisible by 10.

To do the calculation, write down the routing number. For example, the Washington DC routing number is 125008547.

The first digit, fourth and seventh digit is multiplied by 3, the second, fifth and eighth digit are multiplied by 7, and the third, sixth and ninth digits are multiplied by 1.

Then sum up all of the answers. The final solution must be evenly divisible by ten without remainders for it to be valid.

Using the Washington's routing number 125008547 the calculation is as follows, (1 x 3) + (2 x 7) + (5 x 1) + (0 x 3) + (0 x 7 ) + (8 x 1) + (5 x 3) + (4 x 7) + (7 x 1).

It is equals 3 + 14 + 5 + 0 + 0 + 8 + 15 + 28 + 7 =80 which is evenly divisible by 10, and thus the routing number is valid.

You can also find a missing check digit by using the checksum algorithm.

Importance of the Wells Fargo Routing Number

Wells Fargo Routing Number is a necessary code used when doing money transfers. If you want to send money, you need to use your branch details usually recognizable by the routing transit number. Using the correct routing number before you initiate a money transfer is vital.

You need to verify the Wells Fargo routing number before you start any transaction. You must know your state name and your account type to get your Wells Fargo routing number. It is essential to have the correct routing number for the transaction you want to make because the routing number on your checks differ from the routing number you would use for a wire transfer.

The routing numbers are also vital for the IRAs, Prepaid cards and savings accounts and can be used to identify financial institutions when doing other transfers such as bill payments, cheque processing, and Automated Clearing House (ACH) deposits. The American Bankers Association (ABA) usually manage the official routing number registrar.
